Forgive
me if this is a little biased - and not full of facts and
figures. This is just a short introduction from someone who loves
"shooting in the longbow" (me!). This is proper archery, archery as it should be.
Everyone associates Longbows with Robin Hood but the longbow played a
great part in our early military history. Bowyers and fletchers
were important men until longbows were superceded by guns and almost dwindled away.
Recently there has been a wonderful growth in the number of archers
shooting in the longbow. A few years ago, the longbow
was a rarity on the shooting line, now there is usually a gaggle of
them. When I started shooting there was one man in that club with
a longbow and he was looked on as an oddball. This naturally
appealed to me and I took up shooting in the longbow as soon as I
could. For me, there is much more freedom (and not so much
expectancy) when I shoot with my longbow. It is simply you and a stick,
no sight, no stabilizers, no gimmicks, just lots of excuses; and
there are some beauties!
I love turning up to shoot and being ready in 2 minutes while the
'other' archers are fiddling with screws (and dropping them in the
grass). With longbow it is much more of a challenge to shoot
well, you are either good or average, I am saying nothing - but I do
have a lot of fun!
